Rival RS100 Sparring Gloves Review

After previewing the RS100s almost a year ago, it was definitely the right time for a full review, and while I don’t use the word “best” lightly… the Rival RS100s might just earn that crown for sparring gloves.

Quick Verdict

If you value comfort, protection and a truly ergonomic hand fit, the RS100s are simply outstanding, and not just for sparring. They deliver a pillowy outer impact absorption with supportive inner foam and an incredibly luxe hand fit. Downsides?

  • Best for: Boxers, Muay Thai & MMA athletes prioritising sparring comfort, protection and partner safety
  • Consider other gloves instead if: You want Mexican-style, high-feedback knuckle feel or you’re on a tight budget, although… these shouldn’t be used for sparring anyway!

Rival RS100 Specs

  • Weights/Sizes: These badboys come in three weights and two hand sizes; my 16oz pair weighed in at 15.8oz and 15.9oz, super close to true weight.
  • Colourways: With five awesome metallic finishes available; I went with the green & gold and the metallic has held up really well over the last year.
  • Materials: Synthetic microfiber casing (metallic) with a full mesh palm and recessed rubber branding to avoid sharp edges and accidental cuts and grazes.

Visually, these are really modern and on-brand Rival, something bold but really refined. The recessed rubber label under the wrist is just really a thoughtful safety touch.

Hand Fit: Ergonomics Done Right

This is where the RS100s shine. The combination of a cloth inner lining, generous th effortless and natural. It’s genuinely in the top 3 hand fits I’ve ever tried in a boxing glove.

Padding & Protection

The multi-layered foam offers a pillowy outer feel with a slightly firmer, more supportive inner layer. When compressing my fingers into the padding, you’ll meet progressive resistance (soft → medium), which essentially means:

  • Great partner protection for sparring safety
  • Comfortable impact feel on the users hands

Although designed as a sparring glove, the feedback you feel I believe also makes them really viable for bag and pad work, especially if you’ve had hand issues. Just note that softer foams may break down faster than dedicated bag gloves.

Wrist & Stability

The wrist section is super plush with dense padding wrapped all the way around. It’s excellent for parrying and shelling without forearm discomfort, even when the laces are tied tight. The trade-off: as there’s no foam connection between wrist and hand capsule, so wrist stability isn’t amazing. But with a good set of hand wraps and careful lacing technique, you’ll really enjoy them regardless.

Durability: Casing & Mesh

The synthetic microfiber casing used here is soft, slightly grainy, slightly flexible, and in metallic form it can make it hard to distinguish from genuine leather at a glance. Over 12 months of sparring (including sessions with Velcro users), the full mesh palm shows almost no fraying or tearing, only minor discoloration from contact with other boxing gloves. That’s seriously impressive for a mesh-heavy design.

Craftsmanship: Small Quibbles

There are occasional stitching bunch-ups and a few leather edge finishes I’d prefer tucked under piping for a cleaner look. Nothing deal-breaking, but it’s something to note.

Price & Value

For roughly A$369 (about US$225). You’re receiving high-quality materials, comfort, protection, and serious value in comparison to other premium brand names (Winning, Fly, Grant, Phenom).

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Buy

  • Buy if: You spar often, want maximum comfort and partner safety, and love a plush, ergonomic hand fit.
  • Maybe not if: You prefer a Mexican-style puncher’s feel, want ultra-stiff wrist suppoer, or need a glove on a budget.

Pros & Cons

  • Pros: Elite hand fit; plush, protective padding; thoughtful safety details; durable mesh; premium overall comfort.
  • Cons: Tiny finish quirks, that’s about it!

Final Thoughts

The Rival RS100s are among the best sparring gloves I’ve ever used. Expect serious comfort when hitting, being hit, and simply wearing them day-in and day-out is outstanding. If your priority is a protective, premium sparring experience, and you’ve got the budget, these deserve a top spot on your shortlist.
