If you’ve ever spent your hard-earned cash on boxing gloves that fell apart within weeks, or just didn’t suit your training style, you’re not alone.
I’ve been there too. I’m Ash from Fighting Spirit and today, I’ll walk you through how to avoid buying terrible boxing gloves.
Whether you’re training Muay Thai, boxing, MMA, or just want a pair of solid boxing gloves for your home bag workouts, this article will help you avoid the costly mistakes many beginners make.
Tip #1: Avoid Big Chain Fitness & Sports Stores
If you’re just starting out, your first instinct might be to visit a big chain store for boxing gear. But here’s the problem:
-
Most general sports stores don’t specialise in combat sports.
-
Their gear often lacks the durability and protection real combat sports training requires.
-
Staff usually aren’t trained in combat-specific product knowledge and won’t know a bag glove from a gardening glove. (No offence!)
Unless the store focuses heavily on combat sports gear, you’re better off shopping online from reputable fight gear brands or visiting combat sport-specific stores.
Tip #2: Don’t Trust Every Blog You Find on Google
This one is my biggest pet peeves… Seeing those “Top 10 Best Boxing Gloves” blogs littered across the internet.
What’s wrong with them?
-
Many are sponsored or affiliate-based articles written by people who’ve never actually used the gear they are pushing.
-
These lists often include one or two premium gloves… maybe! (like Winning or Hayabusa) alongside cheap junk gloves priced between $10–$50.
-
The goal? To earn affiliate commissions by recommending low-quality products.
How to spot a red flag:
-
Vague reviews with no detailed, personal experience.
-
Overuse of Amazon links.
-
Lack of thorough details about glove construction or use-case suitability.
Stick to blogs or YouTube channels that offer authentic, first-hand reviews from people who actually train in some form of martial art or combat sport.
Tip #3: Look Past the 5-Star Ratings
We’ve all been tempted by products with thousands of 5-star reviews on Amazon or online stores. But remember:
-
Quantity of reviews doesn’t necessarily equal quality.
-
Many “great reviews” are from beginners or hobbyists that don’t train regularly or professionally.
Instead, read the comments. Look for feedback that:
-
Mentions glove durability and experience.
-
Discusses wrist support and padding performance.
-
Describes real training use cases. (Such as recommending for sparring, bag work, etc.)
Tip #4: Ask for Help Before You Buy
Still confused? Not sure what to choose?
Leave a comment on one of my videos or feel free to reach out directly. I’m always happy to offer advice based on your training goals, experience level, and budget.
Sometimes a quick suggestion can save you weeks of regret, lots of dollars and and prevent injury too.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to buying boxing gloves, don’t fall for the traps:
-
Avoid chain store garbage.
-
Don’t believe every blog you read. (Maybe believe this one.)
-
Dig deeper than looking at flashy star ratings.
-
And most importantly, reach out to experts for real advice if you’re unsure.
