Introduction
Today, I’ll be reviewing my first-ever pair of Thai Pads, and thankfully, we’re starting off strong with the Fairtex KPLC5 Lightweight Thai Kick Pads.
For my first Thai Pad review, it only made sense to start with a brand synonymous with Muay Thai!
Company Overview
For most of you tuning in, Fairtex needs no introduction. The brand is to Muay Thai what Nike is to basketball.
From boxing gloves to Muay Thai shorts, Fairtex has cemented itself as one of the OG Muay Thai equipment manufacturers with a stellar global reputation.
Product Overview
I decided to review a pair that breaks from tradition. The Fairtex Lightweight Thai Kick Pads are not your typical old-school, leather-bound, heavy Thai Pads.
Let’s dive into the craftsmanship of these sleek pads before I give my thoughts and feedback.
Weight
As the name suggests, these are incredibly lightweight, coming in at just over 1kg per pad, with only a 10g difference between them.
Aesthetics
Visually, these pads are stunning. The matte black finish with metallic gold accents and sharp red lacing gives them a premium look.
Fairtex’s signature screened target design is another distinguishing feature, making them instantly recognizable. Additionally, there’s a Louis Vuitton-esque print across the top, adding a classy touch.
The only minor critique is the stitched Fairtex logo on the forearm. While it’s their core branding, I feel a black-and-gold colorway would have blended better with the overall design.
Casing Quality
Fairtex uses microfiber leather, which has been a hot topic in fight gear discussions. While many purists swear by animal leather, I think microfiber is a smart choice for Muay Thai pads due to its moisture-wicking properties.
Unlike animal leather, which absorbs sweat, microfiber repels moisture, making it easier to maintain. If you’re not the best at gear upkeep, investing in microfiber products extends longevity and reduces frequent replacements.
Stitching & Lacing
Fairtex nailed the stitching and lacing on these pads. The front panel’s stitching is neatly concealed under the leather, minimizing the risk of tearing from wear and tear.
The lacing is clean and reinforced with a canvas-like material, allowing for a secure fit without putting stress on the leather. The rear side features double stitching on the straps, Velcro, and forearm padding, and I’ve found no loose threads or visible flaws.
Arm Strapping
A Thai Pad is only as good as its arm strapping. Poor grip equals poor performance.
The KPLC5s feature dual Velcro pull-back straps that keep my arms locked in securely. The forearm padding complements the security aspect, adding extra comfort and reducing strain during long sessions.
The gap between the straps and handlebar is perfect for my arm length, making these pads ergonomic and easy to hold.
Padding
These Thai Pads prioritize comfort and protection over traditional stiff padding.
Forearm Padding
The super-plush forearm padding provides an unmatched level of comfort, support, and security. Unlike other Thai Pads that feel too stiff and create discomfort, Fairtex strikes the right balance with its foam density.
Front Padding & Shock Absorption
The KPLC5s shine when it comes to shock absorption and protection for both pad holders and strikers.
While I haven’t dissected them, I suspect they contain at least three layers of foam with varying densities, allowing for excellent feedback and impact absorption. Fairtex has also claimed to have updated their padding for increased durability, though it’s unclear when this change occurred.
The central target area appears to have an additional layer of finer padding, reinforcing the strike zone. The outer layers are plush and bouncy, while the inner layers compress into a denser feel, possibly with a thin PVC sheet for added structure.
Handle Bars
Handlebars are often overlooked, but a poorly designed one can make or break a Thai Pad.
Some brands make them too long (leading to instability), too short (causing hand discomfort), or position them poorly (resulting in an awkward grip).
Fairtex gets it right. Though the bars are slightly longer, they work well with the thick forearm padding, allowing for a neutral wrist position and a secure grip.
Feedback & Experience
When I first received these, I was skeptical due to their lighter weight and softer feel. Most gyms stock traditional, rock-solid leather pads, whereas these feel like a step in a different direction.
However, after months of consistent use, I’ve grown to love them.
- The softness is forgiving for all boxers while still providing solid feedback.
- They don’t deliver that signature “cracking” sound of heavy leather Thai Pads, which I personally enjoy.
- They’re protective, comfortable, stylish, and durable.
- They stay in place, don’t slip upon impact, and have maintained their shape exceptionally well.
Cost & Value
At around $239 AUD, the KPLC5s are on the pricier side for their category.
I purchased mine from Shogun Martial Arts in Sydney, and I’ll drop a link below if you’re interested in grabbing a pair.
While the quality is top-notch, I do think $239 is steep when there are alternatives that offer similar benefits at a lower price. However, Fairtex’s premium branding and Thailand-based craftsmanship contribute to the higher cost.
Who Should Buy These?
These Thai Pads are a fantastic tool for any pad holder, whether you’re a beginner or experienced. They’re lightweight, absorb impact well, and provide excellent comfort.
However, they may not be ideal for:
- Experienced pad holders working with heavy hitters who need something denser and more solid.
- Coaches who prefer smaller, slimmer Thai Pads for accuracy training and fast combinations.
Final Thoughts & Recommendations
That’s a wrap, legends! Thanks for tuning in—hopefully, this review helps you decide if the Fairtex KPLC5s are the right Thai Pads for you.
